BLASPMEMY
Three years ago I visited myself from the future, now present. I told myself (that is, myself –3 years) in no uncertain terms that the girl I was thinking about dating was going to break my heart.
“She’s 19, you dumbass. In 3 years she’ll be a completely different person. She’ll graduate from school and spread her wings and leave you – and it will break your heart.”
“But.. but…” myself (-3) answered, “you don’t know that. Maybe…”
“Maybe nothing,” my then-future self answered, “even if you were 20 years younger this wouldn’t last. She’d still leave you just to be free.”
“But she’s so damn hot. And I haven’t gotten laid in…” countered me (-3).
“I know. But there are other women out there.”
“She’s smart and jaded – an old soul. We get along so well.”
”True. You’d be great friends, probably for life – if you DON’T DATE HER.”
But I (-3) was lonely, horny, and half-crazy after a recent break-up and just wanted to have some fun again. I (-3) didn’t listen, despite repeated dire warnings and heartfelt conversations.
So I (-3) essentially wasted 3 years ignoring my future self until I (-3) have finally caught up with my present self.
Now I (+/-0) need another visit from myself (+3 years from now) to tell me where to find that special someone that won’t waste any more of my time. Unfortunately I (+3) don’t seen to be answering at the moment. Even my new (comparatively futuristic) cell phone can’t seem to get through.
I (+3) am never around when I (+/-0) need me (+3.) I (+3) only seem to come around when I (+/-0) won’t listen and I (+3) don’t speak loudly and clearly enough to get it through the thick skull of present-day me.
Hopefully I (+/-0) won’t be such a dumbass the next few years so that when I (+/-0) meet myself (+3) he won’t look at me (+/-0) with that sad look on his face. Maybe next time I (+3) will smile at me (+/-0) and say, “You finally listened to me.”

CLASSIFIED
I need a new turntable.
EAR PLUGS
No full-color review this week, though I’ve seen a couple of shows lately.
Last Wednesday GG King opened up the Star Bar Wednesday night with music a lot like the other bands he’s been in (Carbonas, for example.) Poppy punk, well crafted and fun.
Those Darlins followed with a strange combo of old time country and garage rock. And they’re damn easy on the eyes too.
King Khan & BBQ Show put on a good show but the joint was so crowded and boisterous I didn’t last long.
Then Friday The Star Bar had another night of action, though only a handful of people were there to witness it. What the…? put on the best show I’ve ever seen them do – really enjoyed it.
Kenny Crucial has some band that cleared out the basement every time they started up – really bad.
Empyres contain a former Hate Bomb but didn’t bring the explosive energy (the thin crowd could’ve been behind their lack of inspiration.)
The Forty Fives were excellent, playing as if the house was packed and nobody wanted to go home. Well, the few people there didn’t want to anyhow, demanding an encore. They are definitely on the ball again.
Full color reviews returning probably next week, but I wanted to get something out there ‘cause there’s so much good stuff in the Prophesy section. Heed the word!

CLASSIFIED
I need a new turntable. Anyone got one laying around?

PROPHESY
November 12, Thursday
Balkans, The Axemen, Times New Viking at The Star Bar.
The N.E.C. open for Shonen Knife at The Earl, along with JEFF and the Brotherhood.

November 13-14
Blast Off Burlesque does "Primetime", a burlesque spoof of TV, at East Atlanta Icehouse in EAV. Doors at 9, show at 10.
Blackbeard’s Lost Weekender at The Cave in Chapel Hill features a ton of garage bands. http://www.myspace.com/bblwofficialpage

November 13, Friday
Charlie Louvin at The Earl, with Dexter Romwebber Duo, Anna Kramer & the Lost Cause. Early show, doors at 8:30.
Bigfoot at The Star Bar. The Spectremen play their last show. The Evils, The Whores also playing. How's that for a Friday the 13th?

November 14, Saturday
A ton of bands are playing at Eyedrum today, noon-midnight, as part of the first annual Eyedrum Earball. http://www.pd.org/~eyedrum/calendar/index.php?eventTypeId=2&id=3216&month=11&year=2009
Judi Chicago at Drunken Unicorn with Hawnay Troof and Airoes.
Jack-O & the Tennessee Tearjerkers, John Paul Keith & the One Four Fives, Knife & the Fourth Ward Daggers at the Star Bar.

November 15, Sunday
Jim Stacy’s new TV show Get Delicious premiers tonight PBA. It showcases some of Atlanta’s best restaurants – no, not the fancy celebrity chef bullshit, the family-run joints that serve real food to real people. If you want to catch it on a REALLY big screen head to The Plaza at 10PM tonight.

November 17, Tuesday
Bizarro Saturday Morning Cartoons at The Plaza, 7:30. It’s the tale of some 18th century grave robbers who get mixed up with the undead. It’s cute, funny, not in the least bit scary and definitely worth watching. I doubt they’ll keep it long, however, so get over there to see it.

Speaking of The Plaza, if you’d like to raise a toast to your editor for his birthday, I’ll be at the Righteous Room on October 20, Tuesday (official b-day is the 22nd, but this is the official gathering) circa 7:30. Hell, it’s been almost 25 years, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they have aged, and with America’s obesogenic environment (yes, I work with scientists and statisticians studying the obesity “epidemic”), no surprise that most of them have gained weight, often quite a lot of weight.
It might not come as such a shock if we’d had more class reunions, or if I’d remained friends with more of these folks. But I’ve seen maybe half a dozen of my graduating class since the 10 year reunion, and only a fraction of our class showed up for that, and even that was almost 15 years ago.
It is a nagging reminder of the passage of time and our own mortality and I really don’t need that in my life right now.
Remembered a few folks that do read this, even if they don't reply.
So here's the weeklyish ezine!

FILM FLAM
A fair number of regular weekly Drive Invaders extended the season for one more week to catch Zombieland, the American answer to Shaun of the Dead. Despite a gory, slow-mo opening credit sequence, there is less focus so much on the horror of zombies than the buddy picture aspects the movie has, with a dash of romance and coming of age tale. It's fun and funny but not terribly interesting (I think Shaun had more going for it) - prefect drive in fare.

EAR PLUGS
Been to a few random events but nothing that motivated me to do a review. However, there is a ton of great stuff to see this weekend, starting tonight with a free show at the Star Bar – Tiger! Tiger!, Electric Cycles, The Humms. Be there AND be square.

STAGE RIGHT, EVEN
Meant to post this last episode or so:

Hey, I just hit Hair last night at 7 Stages. You might want to make mention of it since it involves a number of excellent local musicians - Steve McPeeks (from Hot August Knights and a hundred other bands), Rob Thompson, Warren Ullom and David Miksch from the Judies (Ullom actually has one of the lead roles), Chris Love from Quench, and others. Very fun show - the entire audience was on stage dancing by the end. It runs through Oct. 10, with late night shows on Oct. 3 and 10.
Degenerate AG

CLASSIFIED
Cleaned this out again.
